Spam and AI.

This site has 38 published posts.  It has had 287 comments – all spam to date.   Of late I have taken to extracting a sentence that the spammer uses to attract my attention before posting links to unrelated (sometimes obviously pornographic) sites.

Of course I don’t publish these comments and most other site owner won’t either.   A small percentage will. Only a tiny percentage of people reading the comments will click on them, and an even smaller percentage will end up parting with money.  So its a small percentage of a small percentage, of a small percentage of a huge number. It’s enough to get a little money to a small number of people and cause minor irritation to everyone.  

I suspect in the past all of these nuisance posts came from people trying to make a few pence per post, paid for by whoever’s site the comment links to. But now I suspect that even these people are being replaced by spambots and the spambot controllers.  Even the human spammers are being replaced by AI. 

Soon (maybe already)  the spambot controllers will be replaced by AI.  A computer will sit there, unattended, 24 hrs per day, surfing the web looking for anywhere it can leave a comment or post an email.  Porn, gambling, and similar site owners will submit their sites to the computer on line, together with payment. $x for $y million placements.

The computer owner sits on the beach drinking his piña coladas until there are so many similar services that the market rate reduces to a level where only those people in the lowest cost economies will be in the market – making enough money to cover costs and to eat modestly.

Meanwhile most site owners will simply turn off comments.  I have just turned off comments for posts older than a month, which is most of them.
