Two current, topical, and shaming example are Edinburgh Tram System and HS2.
Edinburgh tram system was originally budgeted at £498 million, with £375 million funding from the Scottish Government and £45 million by Edinburgh council.
But even the dogs in the street knew that this would increase. It ballooned, beyond the ability of Edinburgh to pay for it – so the scope was drastically reduced.
The current estimate is £776m, with £550m coming from the Scottish Government and £226m from Edinburgh council.
Just figures – only bankers think in £m, and, to politicians, it’s monopoly money. Lets clarify it:-
The tram system will cost
£1241 for each Edinburgh Household
£230 for each Scottish Household.
The tram system will replace the No 22 bus, and the entire Edinburgh bus system will have fares increased to subsidise the trams which will run at a loss.
Think that’s bad?
HS2 estimated cost is £50bn pounds (and even the above mentioned dogs in the street know that it will increase – its already gone up about 50% – the Institute of Economic Affairs estimate £80bn)
HS2 will cost
£2033 for each UK household
HS2 will cut the journey from London to Birmingham from 1hr 24min to 49 minutes and and from London to Manchester from 2hr 8min to 1hr 8min.
If you are living in the South West, the East Midlands, the (desolate) North East, the (unloved) North West, Wales, Northern Ireland, or Scotland, then you get the joy of subsidising it. And THATS ALL.
In fact, the average household in Edinburgh which does not use the trams will be subsidising these grandiose schemes to the tune of £3274, with no direct benefits. It’s not monopoly money to them!

High Speed Trains. Not coming to Scotland anytime soon! How do you feel about the people of Scotland having to stump up £4,771 million pounds for a transport project that not only comes nowhere near Scotland, but offers absolutely no economic benefit to our economy at all? An even better
